necroaesthetics ∧ leo

leo is a performer interested in philosophy, performance studies, and histories. In development since 2018, leo’s multimedia opera “Just Another Shadie Bitch” materializes these interests by examining the relationship between performance, aesthetics, and labor theory. Through installations, performative occasions, and sounding, this project focuses on the unspoken parameters applied in the judgment and appreciation of artistic practices inside Western European aesthetics philosophy.
necroaesthetics is the philosophical umbrella of leo’s work that rubs against the field of aesthetics. a juxtaposition of necr- [death] and -aesthetics [as in the study of perception by senses, to feel, and/or the study and criticism of taste or beauty], necr(o)aesthetics is preoccupied with all that continental philosophy excluded or deemed irrelevant in the making of shared reality, e.g., the dead, the inorganic, the ritualistic, the fictional, and so forth. in itself, this word gestures towards the main limiting premise of aesthetics, which leo’s practice addresses: its dependence on the concept of a living, self-contained, and self-conscious body for this philosophical thinking to be logically valid.
Between 2010 and 2016, leo studied Business Management and Arts and Design at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (BR) and attended the School of Visual Arts Parque Lage (BR). In 2018 leo earned an MFA degree in New Media from the Universität der Künste Berlin (DE). Between 2020 and 2022, leo was immersed in the complexity of vocal-sounding through the work of Samita Sinha.
leo was a fellow at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems (DE), at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart (DE), and in the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (US). leo’s performative practice and artistic works were presented in 2022 at the D21 Kunstraum, Leipzig (DE), in the 2020 Fotofest Biennial, Houston (US), in the 2019 Core Exhibition at The Glassell School of Arts – Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (US), in 2018 in Mutterzunge at Babylon Berlin (DE), and other venues.
