propinquity to paper
This research project is committed to the two-dimensional format as a starting point for redressing perception. It considers how abstraction, color theory, and art-historical narratives shape contemporary understandings of what is deemed beautiful, while simultaneously erasing the political implications embedded in such aesthetic concepts.
Drawing from art history and critical philosophy, the project takes the Brazilian Concrete and Neo-Concrete movements, U.S.-American modern painting, and German abstraction in photography and painting as its primary references. It was developed through studio-based research during the BS Projects Fellowship.
