eye on the sparrow
eye on the sparrow is a vocal and somatic work that brings together voice, ektara, and explorations of black queer embodiment. leo shares a process of vocal improvisation influenced by Southeast Asian devotional practices, Deep Listening, and a critical engagement with the Western European operatic voice. The work foregrounds the relationship between form (shape), intention, colonial histories, heritage, and the absence thereof, situating sound as both a personal and collective site of exploration.
Through prolonged tones, silences, breath, and bodily noises, the work examines how these sonic elements affect both practitioners and listeners. By privileging sustained attention and subtle variations in vocal and physical presence, this piece investigates the materiality of sound, the politics of listening, and the ways in which voice and body can intervene in inherited musical and cultural structures.
